St. Louis born and raised, Luis Benitez is among the leaders

of a new generation of international high altitude mountaineers

 

  • On May 21, 2007, Luis attained his sixth summit of Mt. Everest.
  • During his 2006 Everest expedition, he reported for the National Geographic television series "Wild Chronicles" and ABC-TV News.
  • He holds the non-Sherpa world record for most consecutive summits of Mt. Everest: four in four years.
  • Luis is one of the youngest, most accomplished and in demand high altitude mountaineering guides in the world, with a renowned client list, including blind athlete Erik Weihenmayer, whom he guided to his historic 2001 Everest summit. That expedition was chronicled in the documentary film "Farther Than the Eye Can See."
  • He teaches a leadership through mountaineering program annually in Ecuador for the Wharton School of Business.
  • He is a mountaineering correspondent for “The ESPN Colorado Outdoor Show” (broadcast 8:00AM Saturdays in the Denver area on 560AM/ archived on the web at http://www.outdoorshow.us/.
  • For 14 years, he has taught a wide array of outdoor skills from rock climbing to kayaking for Outward Bound in Colorado.
  • He has suffered from severe asthma since infancy and high altitude mountaineering has helped him overcome it.
